This week, I made a stop at one of my favorite local spots, Plum Creek Park. The park was a great place to hang out in spring and fall, but almost unbearable in summer. The creek was wide, shallow and sluggish — perfect mosquito breeding grounds. They hung over the water in clouds in the hot months. Last year, with one of the stimulus grants, they narrowed and deepened the creek bed, adding natural plantings (instead of the plain mowed grass) and really made it lovely. The creek is too fast for mosquitoes now and I can’t wait to see it this summer. Finally! My tax dollars at work.

You can just see some of the park buildings in the background. This looks like it’s out in the woods, but it is actually just off a busy street in Kent. There is traffic along the road right behind me as I took this picture.

Isn’t that a pretty, meandering path?

I am so ready for Spring at the local park!

I am on the road this week (in Detroit at our new facility there) and so I thought I would share a couple of pics from the road. One of the things that makes business travel worthwhile is an expense account and dining out with colleagues. This past week, we hit some great places, but one of my favorites is the Kona Grill. A few of us were determined to eat ourselves into a sushi coma…and we very nearly succeeded! Here are some (admittedly fuzzy) pics from my colleague’s iPhone camera.

This is the before picture:

And these are the same plates about 10 minutes later:

That was quite a tasty meal!

We’ve got snow outside — just in time for my flight tomorrow — but I don’t want to think about bad weather right now. Instead, I’ve got more great street art for you, from a work trip I took to Los Angeles last year. (I really need to get out, when the weather is good, and take some pics of the street art and murals and cool graffiti right here in my town.) I loved this mural because it’s so colorful and funny. The fact that it was a beautiful sunny day, while I am looking out my window at a winter wonderland, doesn’t hurt a bit.

My apologies for the abortive post earlier. The problem with trolling your old photos for inspiration is that you occasionally find you’ve used the same picture twice!

To stay on the same theme, more street art today! This is more like graffiti than art, but it’s still gorgeous. I always have to be careful when I use these pictures later — I love to use them as computer wallpaper when I’m teaching, and more than once I’ve had a student in the class recognize a location from them. But in this case, the graffiti isn’t in English, so I had to have my boss, who speaks Dutch and a bit of German, check this out before I used it. I wanted to be sure it didn’t say anything that I didn’t want splashed in front of the class!

This has been a bizarre weather week in Ohio. We’ve had it all — blowing snow, pouring rain, thunder and sunshine. Today, we’re back to winter and as I was carrying some things in from the car, I decided to capture a little scene in my backyard.

This shed was pretty dilapidated when I moved in, but it has almost completely collapsed in the last year. I love photos of abandoned buildings. I just wish this one wasn’t in my backyard. I’m really hoping to talk the landlord into pulling it down this spring.

The only new photo I have this week is a picture of one of my colleagues who fell asleep on the drive to the airport Wednesday; it’s funny, but it seems unfair to post it here. Instead, this gives me an excuse to look through my old photos and find something fun.

These pics are from a trip I took a few years ago for a friend’s wedding. I bet I don’t even have to tell you the location!

Come on - you know where this is!

Lucky me -- I got sunshine in Seattle!

I’m on the road this week, in chilly Detroit, so it’s fitting that I have a picture from the road. If you’ve ever been to the Detroit International Airport, you’ll recognize this view of the tunnel between the terminals:

The tunnel has an undersea theme with fish and other aquatic decorations on the walls, and the undulating blue walls give it a real other-worldly appeal. I could use this tunnel to inspire a dozen sci fi stories!

Tuesday morning, first recycling day of the new year, I was out around 7:00 am, hauling out the recycling and taking out the trash. We’d had a heavy snow the night before and the yard had that hush you get in the snow. It was still mostly dark, so everything was a deep blue and I couldn’t resist taking a photo:

This week, I was looking for some graphics files and came across a folder of photos from a trip I took to Paris back in 2005. This was a birthday trip, with a friend who was also celebrating a monumental birthday, her sister, and a couple of other friends. We had a wonderful week and I have a ton of wonderful pictures, but this first one is of the birthday brunch we put together with things from one of the lovely fresh-air markets:

Doesn’t that look tempting? Click on the photo to see a larger version were you can really drool over those tempting morsels.

One of the things I love about cities is the way that they have so many hidden spaces — little gardens, parks, walkways, places that you don’t see from the major paths through town. This is a little glimpse of a garden we fell in love with:

So, those are my photos for this last Saturday Snapshot of the year. I think for next year, I need to resolve to get my camera charged up and take more pictures!

Meet my cat, CoCo. She will follow the afternoon sun all over the living room, sprawling on the floor, on the arm of the couch, on the top of the bookshelf or anyplace at all that has an appealing patch of sunshine. One of her favorite spots is on the cabinet in front of the tv. The sun is shining on CoCo, but it’s snowing on my tv.
