As for my favorites, I love mysteries. I’ve found that good mysteries come in all kinds of packages – horror novels can have a mystery at their center, detective novels, crime novels, gothic novels all have their share of mystery. I do love a good scare, so a well-written horror novel is a treasure. I grew up on Dracula and Frankenstein and Alfred Hitchcock story anthologies, and I was the kid who always told stories that scared the pants off of everyone else at slumber parties.
One other thing I love – post apocalypse stories. You know the ones, where most of humanity has been wiped out by a plague or natural disaster and a small band of survivors tries to make a new civilization. I have always found those really appealing. I’m not sure whether it’s the chance to start over or the struggle or the fact that these days I can almost imagine it happening, but they’re a big favorite of mine.
