It’s Wednesday and time for more new words! I’m on the road so it’s a short post this week, but there are a few words I wanted to share.
My words this week come from The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny. It takes place in a remote village in Quebec, so I’ve had a chance to practice a little of my college French. Still, there were a few words I thought you might find interesting…
1. Chatelaine: “As a chatelaine would, confident in her place and without need to prove it.”
The mistress of a chateau or large country house .
Wall-eyed: “He approached the tall, wall-eyed dark horse, who shied away.”
Having large bulging or staring eyes. I particularly loved this part, because the chatelaine above had planned to buy some lovely riding horses, and instead bought 4 abused and neglected horses, intended for slaughter. Such a very kind thing to do – I’m hoping it works out for her.
Well, those are all I have this week. I guess I need to find some tougher reading assignments. What new words did YOU learn this week?
