Review: Fellside by M. R. Carey

Loved this! A really good ghost story – Jess is a heroin addict who caused a fire that killed a young boy. She’s serving her sentence at Fellside Prison, where she is haunted by her mistakes and the boy she feels responsible for.

Fellside Prison is not a quiet place. The walls whisper to Jess and she is visited by…something. A spirit? A ghost? Or just a figment of her troubled mind. She is dealing with her guilt over the death of the boy and Jess is convinced that he’s visiting her and that there is more to his story than what came out at her trial. It’s a chance for Jess to atone for her sins and to give the boy’s spirit some peace.

There is also the reality of the prison around her. There are resentments old and new. There is all the violence you might expect and more. The prison has its own hierarchy, but Jess is somewhat removed from it – she is a high-profile inmate, and that does not endear her to her fellow prisoners. But the prisoners and their jailers have their own plots and intrigue and every word and glance is dangerous. It was easy to get caught up in their stories.

The ending is a bit ambiguous, which I love, but also very satisfying. Definitely a great read. I didn’t realize until I finished the book that it’s by the author of The Girl With All The Gifts (my Kindle copy doesn’t have the gold label on the front). That was also a great book and movie, well worth checking out.

My copy of Fellside came from my personal library.
