Hopefully, you took my advice and gave yourself a rest before digging in to this one. It is every bit as good as The Price You Pay (and this review has spoilers for that book, so beware) and you’ll need to rest up and hydrate.
When we last saw Jack Price, the Seven Demons had destroyed his artisan cocaine empire. Then he killed half of the Demons and cut a deal with the other half to take over the team. Now Jack has the unenviable job of keeping a bunch of killers in line. People like:
Doc: The scientist of the group (and Jack’s lover). She kills a man by patting him on the shoulder, delivering a lethal pathogen that will start its deadly business in about 48 hours.
Volodya: A Ukrainian assassin with unsettling habits, possibly including cannibalism
Lucille: A psychotic killer who specializes in lethal, razor-edged hugs.
Fred: Jack’s predecessor, now reduced to a severed head on a stick.
Evil Hansel: A psychotic new antagonist who introduces himself to Jack by stabbing him with an oyster knife.
Doesn’t that sound like a fun crowd? There is also the guy that Jack keeps in a crate (I kept worrying that they would forget to feed him). Jack can really hold a grudge.
The Demons are hired to rob a bank – the most unrobbable bank on the planet. But the story is a lot more complicated than just “rob the bank” and the betrayals and double-crosses mean trouble for everyone. You do not want to get on Jack’s bad side. He’s still got the last guy who annoyed him in a crate.
Every bit as violent and volatile as The Price You Pay, if you don’t mind a bit of graphic violence then you are going to love this roller coaster.
My copy of Seven Demons came from my local library. Go out today and show your library some love.
