I chose this quote about reading in school because I think it’s quite true. I think that teachers would be more effective — and students would be better served in the long run — if teachers assigned them books that instilled a love of reading. Instead, too many kids come away believing that reading is something awful that they have to suffer through. After trudging through Ethan Frome or The Scarlet Letter, how could you possibly imagine that reading could be pleasant?
“I think they assign things to students which are way over their heads, which destroy your love of reading, rather than leading you to it. I don’t understand that.”
