Review: The Heart of the Mummy by Shane Carrow

The final installment (at least so far) in the Avery & Carter series is The Heart of the Mummy. Lucas Avery and Sam Carter find themselves working together again to stop the murderous rampage of an ancient Egyptian mummy.

Professor Charles Cavendish, is an archaeologist and expert in ancient Egyptian culture. He embarks on an expedition to uncover a hidden tomb deep in the desert. Cavendish and his team stumble upon an untouched tomb believed to belong to an obscure but powerful Egyptian priest, Akh-Tut. The tomb is filled with ancient relics, but the most intriguing find is a strange, heart-shaped artifact made of gold and precious stones—referred to as “the Heart of the Mummy.” Cavendish takes the Heart back to England for further study – but Akh-Tut wants it back.

Members of the expedition meet gruesome ends as Avery and Carter – assisted by Avery’s sister, Isabel, who is a member of the expedition – work to break the curse before Akh-Tut kills them all and then turns on London.

Again, this is well-researched and full of amazing details. I love the tension between Avery and his sister – as well as the tension of a different sort that is brewing between Isabel and Carter – and finally we get to see the full scope of Avery’s new powers.

Heart of the Mummy came out in 2023, so I hold out hope that there might be another installment. I will be doubly pleased if Sam and Lucas team up with Isabel for a new adventure. In the meantime, I highly recommend this series. It’s quick, fun, full of historical detail and gothic atmosphere.
