I am in mourning…

Joseph-Beth Booksellers, my favorite local bookstore, is closing its doors.

I imagine that its hard to keep such an amazing space open in the days of Amazon and eReaders.  But Joseph-Beth!  This place drew in some amazing authors – I met writers, celebrities, and book lovers of all sorts.  I went to book signings, book clubs and midnight Harry Potter sales.   I loved them all.  I’ve spent hours in the Bistro, eating and drinking and reading.  I used it a couple of times as a meeting place for first dates.  I’ve bought more books than I can count there, but sadly, that wasn’t enough.

I’ll admit that I love the ease and convenience of ordering books online.  I love the discount prices that a place like Amazon can offer.  But no website can offer the camaraderie of fellow book lovers.   This is a place that will really be missed.

It is definitely a sad day. It should serve as a reminder to the rest of us to support our local indies.

I feel your pain- our local bookstore, Davis-Kidd, which was owned by the same company as Joseph Beth, is closing too. As far as I know, no other local bookstore does author signings, and I’m very sad about DK closing down. The whole thing just bites. 🙁

Steph, when I was talking about this online, a friend of mine from NYC said she was shocked and saddened, even though she had never been to Cleveland. She follows a lot of authors and she *always* sees Joseph-Beth on the book tour itineraries. Places like this are a real loss to the booklover community.
