Saturday Snapshot

Saturday, May 12th, 2012

Saturday Snapshot is hosted by Alyce at At Home with Books. To participate, post a photo that you (or a friend or family member) have taken then leave a direct link to your post in the Mister Linky. Photos can be old or new, and be of any subject as long as they are clean and appropriate for all eyes to see. How much detail you give in the caption is entirely up to you. Please don’t post random photos that you find online.

Today, I’ve got some more photos from my trip to Sheffield and my side trip to London. Once again, you’re not likely to see a lot of typical photos, but I found so many interesting things to see! These are a few of my favorites…

I am going to be traveling all day Saturday, so I don’t know if I will get a chance to add this to the Linky, but at least I’ll have the post scheduled. I am in Sheffield, England this week, training at our laboratory here. One of the trainees was born here and has been kind enough to show me around the city. The city tour seems to include a large number of pubs. Hmmm. Last night, he invited me out to hear one of his mates at a local venue called The Hop. Great pub and some really amazing artwork:

And I wouldn’t want to happen upon this after one pint too many:

And more street art! This is right across from our hotel and I love the way they have turned an ordinary brick wall into a bit of charming public art. We passed another, similar piece featuring a bunch of buzzards (!) but sadly, I didn’t have the camera with me.

Last week, I had a horrible flight home from California. I left Orange County at 9:30 pm and landed in Atlanta at 4:30 am with a 3 hour layover. I normally love a red-eye, because I sleep really well on planes, but this was just nuts.

The trains were down for maintenance, so I had to hoof it from Terminal T to Terminal C. The underground tunnels are kind of spooky, that late at night. I’m not sure whether it’s because there are so few people there, or because anyone is there at all! But they had a lovely sculpture display by African artists, and I had the chance to take a few pictures:

This week, I am traveling (go figure!) and so I’ve got a few pics from the road. First, I found the button! As you might recall from an earlier Snapshot, there is a great light show in the tunnel at the Detroit airport. The only concern is that the flashing lights can cause problems for people with certain medical conditions, so there is a button you can press to suspend the light show. It’s pretty well hidden, but I found it:

I haven’t pressed the button, but eventually, I will.

And next, here’s my desk at the hotel. I was working late at night on my website, getting some things loaded for the next day. Trying to keep the site up-to-date on the road can be hard, but it does help me keep things organized.

Last week, I was in St. Paul, MN for work. I absolutely love the Twin Cities area – so much culture, great music, interesting downtown areas, and great food. This was taken on the walk to one of our favorite St. Paul restaurants, The Happy Gnome. Dumb name, but great food and amazing beer selection!

Yeah, we’ve all had days like that.

Well, this has been a long week. I’m at 5 weeks straight on the road, one more week yet to go, at least. And then we start back up in Cincinnati again.

No new photos this week, but I was digging through some old photos and found several shots of hotel rooms I’ve stayed in. American hotel rooms are enormous compared to European rooms. I’ve had some rooms on European business trips that might make good walk-in closets…if you knocked down a couple of walls.

First, Las Vegas! We stayed at the Rio and the rooms were bigger than my first apartment, and had a nicer kitchen. I’m actually standing in the middle of the room — the desk is off to my right and the couch, 2 chairs, coffee table and tv are behind me.

Next, a decent-sized hotel in Hengelo, a small town in The Netherlands. I only ended up with this room because we misunderstood the price on the website. We thought it was in US dollars. Turns out, it was in Euros. Ouch. Note the interesting bed: most double beds in European hotels are actually two single beds. Apparently, they think even married people don’t sleep close together!

And finally, the tiniest of them all. This was taken in the hotel I stayed in during my last work visit to Amsterdam. It was ridiculously tiny, but the hotel has such a great location that I put up with sleeping in a broom closet for several days. Seriously, this is all there was to the room. You can’t see the door of the bathroom, but you’re looking at the whole room.

This week, we tried out some new restaurants in Detroit. If you’re in the area, be sure to check out Toast – great food, funky decor, and it was perfect for last week’s unseasonably warm weather. I love eclectic restaurant decor, so I grabbed a couple of snapshots of the restaurant’s artwork:

This week, I’ve got some pics from my visit to my company’s newest facility in Detroit, Michigan. The last day I was in town, they hosted an employee event that included pizza and beer and whirlyball. Now, if you have never played whirlyball, it’s sort of a cross between basketball and lacrosse — you’ve got a scoop that you use to catch the whiffle ball, and you try to hurl it into a target that is shaped like a basketball backboard. And you do all this while riding in bumper cars. Much fun was had by all.

Last week, I got a chance to do a little retail therapy and hang out with my friend Tammy. We ended the day at one of my favorite spots, Riverside Wine in Kent. It’s a combination retail store/restaurant/wine bar. They’ve got a great selection of wines and beers, plus we had some terrific munchies and listened to a a very pleasant singer/musician. A nice time, all in all.

This isn’t one of my happier pictures. This house is right down the road from me and I am completely appalled at how neglected and ragged this flag has become. It’s so incredibly disrespectful. The flag is wrapped several times around the pole. It is faded and torn, and you can see one of the long strips hanging from it.

My father is Marine and is active in the local Legion, and I’m hoping that he can get someone to do something about this. I know there is a protocol for dealing with old, worn-out flags, but I don’t know if there’s a standard procedure for doing it on someone else’s property. I’m not even sure if the homeowners are the ones who originally put it up, but it’s long past time for it to come down.
